Portuguese Dishes You Must Try
Cataplana
The Algarve's signature dish. A rich seafood stew cooked in a hinged copper pot — typically with clams, prawns, chorizo, and white wine. Every restaurant has its own version. O Marinheiro in Albufeira does an exceptional one.
Chicken Piri-Piri
Guia (where Casa da Parra is located) is the piri-piri capital of Portugal. Butterflied chicken marinated in a fiery chilli sauce and charcoal-grilled. Ramires and O Teodósio — both five minutes from the villa — have been rivals for decades. Try both.
Grilled Sardines (Sardinhas Assadas)
A summer staple. Fresh sardines grilled over charcoal and served with boiled potatoes, salad, and olive oil. Best enjoyed at a beachside restaurant. The sardine season runs June to October.
Pastéis de Nata
Portugal's famous custard tarts. Crispy puff pastry filled with silky egg custard, dusted with cinnamon. Available at every bakery — the best are served warm. Try the Pastelaria Ramos in Albufeira.
Bacalhau (Salt Cod)
The Portuguese say there are 365 ways to cook bacalhau — one for every day of the year. Common preparations include Bacalhau à Brás (shredded with fried potatoes and eggs) and Bacalhau com Natas (baked in cream).
Bifana
A humble pork sandwich that punches well above its weight. Thin pork steaks marinated in garlic and white wine, served in a crusty roll. The perfect quick lunch.

Ramires — 5 minutes
The most famous piri-piri chicken in the Algarve. Simple, loud, and absolutely delicious. Expect to queue in summer.
Vila Joya — 8 minutes
Two Michelin stars. Chef Dieter Koschina's tasting menu in a clifftop setting. A once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. Book weeks in advance.
O Marinheiro — 15 minutes
Outstanding seafood in Albufeira's old town. The cataplana is the star, but everything from the daily catch is superb.
A Ruína — 15 minutes
Beachfront dining in old town Albufeira. Fresh fish, great prices, and a sunset setting that's hard to beat.
Bon Bon — 20 minutes (Carvoeiro)
One Michelin star. Chef Louis Anjos creates inventive modern Portuguese cuisine in a relaxed setting.
Algarve Wine Regions
The Algarve has four DOC wine sub-regions — Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira — and quality has improved dramatically in the past decade.
Wines to look for:
- Vida Nova (Sir Cliff Richard's vineyard near Albufeira) — Approachable reds and rosés. The vineyard offers tours and tastings, 20 minutes from the villa
- Quinta dos Vales (Lagoa) — Award-winning reds and a beautiful estate open for visits
- Quinta do Francês (Silves) — Small-production wines with real character. Tours by appointment
- Monte da Casteleja (Lagos) — Organic wines from the western Algarve
Wine tasting tip: Many quintas offer guided tastings for €10–20 per person. Combine a tasting with lunch at the vineyard for a memorable day out.

Albufeira Municipal Market — 15 minutes
Fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Open mornings Monday to Saturday. Arrive early for the best selection.
Algarve Shopping — 10 minutes
A modern shopping centre with a Continente supermarket — good for stocking up the villa kitchen.
Local bakeries in Guia — 5 minutes
Fresh bread, pastéis de nata, and regional pastries daily.
